WHAT KIND OF STUDENTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

We have an absolutely wonderful community full of truly wonderful and authentic people, and our ideal students are people who want to be a part of a very supportive and positive environment, who are always willing to work hard and take their independent study time seriously. United in the passion for the field of Osteopathy.

 

Please note that this curriculum is not for the faint of heart. It is challenging and rigorous, and will require you to have excellent time management skills and the willingness to face obstacles and overcome them. There will be times where you will fail a test or a quiz, but please know that we do not expect you to be perfect all of the time – we only expect that you learn and rise up to the challenge, and that when a test does not go the way you want, you take it as a learning opportunity and do better next time.

 

Never be afraid to ask your peers, your instructor, or the staff for extra support if you need it. That’s what we’re here for! Come visit us and meet fellow osteopathic students.

CAN I VISIT BEFORE I APPLY?

Everyone is welcome to join us for our special sessions, where Eric Sanderson teaches what essentially is a mini class for for both currently enrolled students and those who are interested in the school. These sessions are held on Sunday evenings and are also treated like our open house, to give you a look and feel at what it’s like to be a student at our school. During these special sessions we highly encourage you to speak with Eric, or some of our students.

 

Reservations are not required, but we would appreciate a heads up that you will be attending, so that we can make sure there is a seat for you!

WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF THE PROGRAM AND WHAT DEGREE WILL I RECEIVE?

The program is a little over 5 years and the length depends on the specialty certificate that you choose. It’s not mandatory to pick a specialty program at the end, but it’s highly recommended. Within the 5 years we are confident that you will become an independent thinker and that it will be safe for you to work with the public as an osteopathic practitioner. We are currently working on the degree that we will be giving students, and will give an update once the decision has been made.

HOW OFTEN ARE COURSES HELD? AND HOW MANY TO EXPECT IN A YEAR?

In general, there are 9 courses per school year and you will likely attend one a month (some months may have 2) between August and the following June.

 

We also have some online course material and lots of online resources for your perusal.

 

Live courses are usually held on Thursdays through Sundays for about 8 hours each day.

CAN I ATTEND PART-TIME?

If you need to take the program on a part-time basis (5 or less courses per year), we can certainly accommodate you. However, please be prepared to practice efficient time management in terms of studying and class participation, and expect that it will likely take longer than 5 years to complete the entire program.

DO YOU ACCEPT INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS?

Yes, and some students will be traveling in from abroad, so there will be a mixture of resident Canadians and people who don’t live in Canada.

CAN I APPLY TO OSAP FOR THIS PROGRAM?

Unfortunately, no.

 

We recommend taking out a loan or student line of credit, if necessary.

PREPATORY PROGRAM

The ‘prep’ program is a curated series of open source digital texts that cover the basic health sciences. The prep program was designed to bridge the gap in education for students who do not have and extensive background in health sciences coming into the full time OAoPO program. The prep program consists of a series of readings on physics, chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology. Once they have completed all of the readings and associated chapter review questions, the students are given a series of synthesis questions on the material that require single page responses which demonstrate that the student has understood the principles and is now prepared for the lecture content of the program. The prep program is designed to assist the learner with developing the appropriate foundation in health sciences and thereby ensure their success in our program.

PROGRAM AND COURSE INFORMATION

WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT OAOPO?

What makes this school unique within Osteopathy worldwide is the long research process that went into finalizing the curriculum and content. The program was literally years in the making and was the result of many conversations with numerous different authorities in the osteopathic world. After all those conversations, years of study and practice, it was apparent that to make a real difference in turning out state of the art practitioners – and what other programs were not doing – is teaching students to think and not follow a formula, and to not be dependent on a “guru” for their answers. The best practitioners are the ones who reason and think independently and they have to be taught to do so from day 1!

 

One of the major problems with many osteopathic programs is that studying health science is seen as unnecessary for a good practitioner, and as a simple “necessary evil” to pass an exam. In the end, many programs end up focusing on a formula, and teaching that osteopathy is all about good hands or developing instincts, thus robbing the student of the possibility of integrating science and art.

 

In the OAoPO, the goal of the program is to revolutionize the way osteopathy is taught, by artfully blending modern health science with traditional osteopathic practices, with a focus on independent thinking and an abandonment of formulaic thinking. It is our goal to create superb practitioners, who are best able to help and address their patients’ individual needs. To do this, we support our students and offer them the very best resources and curriculum available. We have world-class instructors, and at the end of the program, they will not be your gurus – they will be your peers.

WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY AND WHERE DID IT COME FROM?

Osteopathy was founded by Dr. A. T. Still. After losing his family to a meningitis outbreak, he abandoned conventional medicine and went in search of a method of healing based on utilizing the body’s own resources to bring the patient’s system back towards health. Since his time there have been numerous contributions to the field of osteopathic study and practice, and numerous versions of technique and concept have been added to osteopathy.

WHERE DOES COMPLEXITY FIT IN THE CURRICULUM?

Some of the principles of complexity that are central to our curriculum include:

  • To avoid formulas and formulaic thinking at all costs
  • To study form (anatomy and related sciences like physiology)
  • To study not just the minimum, but to constantly strive to learn
    throughout one’s life
  • To develop as individuals within the role of being a practitioner
  • To understand and not just to imitate
  • To question and explore the concepts and make them living ideas not fixed ideological constructs.

COURSE COSTS AND GENERAL INFO

Each course is 30 hours in length and at the end of the course you receive a certification completion. A course runs for 4 days (usually Thursday – Sunday).

MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS

STUDENT PAYMENT

At the beginning of the first semester, each student will be given a tuition statement with the total owing tuition for the school year and a breakdown of costs. It is an official document with a corporate seal, and should be sufficient for those who need to apply for a student line of credit.

 

We highly recommend applying for a student line of credit or a loan for the school year!

 

Payments can be made upfront for the school year, on a monthly basis, or on the first day of each individual course.

 

Typically, an average yearly tuition cost for a diploma program student would be $9,900. This includes only the base courses for the school year, and not any additional or optional courses.

 

If you decide to pay on a monthly basis, this would work out to about $1,100 per month, for the 9 month school year for diploma students. Paying course-by-course can work out to a similar breakdown, however, there are occasionally two courses in a month.
We accept payment via Interac e-Transfer, Visa, Mastercard, debit, and cheque.

 

Unfortunately, we are not eligible for OSAP


PAYMENT PLANS

Payment plans are handled on a case-by-case basis, and are typically a compassionate last resort option, should other funding not be able to be secured. They are only available to diploma students.
We recommend applying for a student line of credit or a student loan first, if possible.

 

In general, a payment plan will break your payments up into 12 monthly payments, instead of 9, for a typical school year. The full amount of tuition is still due before the next school year.
Students on a payment plan are responsible for adhering to the monthly due dates outlined in their individual plans and paying the agreed upon payment amount each time. Failure to do so can result in late fees, ineligibility for future payment plans, inability to enroll in future classes, and withholding of certificates/diplomas until full payment is made.

CAN I RETAKE A COURSE?

If you struggled with a course or simply need a refresher, you’re more than welcome to retake it. The cost is $100.00/per day.

If you simply need a one-day refresher of a certain technique or subject, you’re welcome to audit the course for a day, free of charge. Just please contact us at info@progressiveosteopathy.ca with the course you wish to audit, the day you wish to come, and the times you plan to be there. This does not apply if you take more than 1 day of the course.


GUIDED PRACTICE SESSIONS

  • Full Time Requirements: Attend a minimum of 6 guided practice sessions per month.
  • Practitioner Program Requirements: Attend 4 guided practice sessions/per month. (*)This may vary depending on previous training

 

These sessions are to follow up with the material taught in the regular osteopathic modules and give the student the opportunity to develop the necessary hands on skill and experience required for a clinical practice.

 

Much of the content of the osteopathic modules focuses on lectures and then discussion on how to critically think, and develop interactive techniques. The guided student practice sessions are intrinsically co-ordinated with the lecture schedule to provide the hands on practice required to develop the level of skill that is required to successfully complete the OAoPO program.

 

The hours in guided student practice sessions count towards the learners clinical hours and are mandatory for every full time and part time student.

 

The WHO document on osteopathic training suggests that a student has 1000 hours of clinical training

CAN I BRING MY OWN LUNCH?

Of course!

We offer tea, coffee and water at no charge. With dairy and non dairy options.


EXAM REWRITES

We do allow for everyone to have an opportunity to rewrite their exam if they’ve failed, if they have permission from the Principal. All exam rewrites have to be completed NO later than October of the current school year.

This is completely up to the discretion of the Principal and feedback from instructors. Depending on your performance, it is up to Principals discretion to allow you to rewrite the exam or have you retake certain courses.

COVID-19

HOW WE’RE ACCOMODATING YOUR EDUCATION WITHOUT COMPROMISE DURING THE PANDEMIC OF THE NOVEL VIRUS CO

In this time of uncertainty, it is important for everyone to know that we will make every effort to protect our students and staff from any health risks associated with COVID 19. To do so we will be temporarily changing the structure of our classes to a mix of online lecture and in person training that balances the requirements for osteopathic education and the health concerns that we are currently experiencing. To do this we consulted with Toronto Public Health, who were very generous with their time and information resources.

 

To be an effective practitioner in a manual osteopathic paradigm requires extensive study in health sciences especially anatomy, and an in-depth study of palpation through hands on education. The hands-on education required to be an effective osteopathic practitioner is not measured in hours, but in hundreds of hours of exposure and guidance. To perform safe and effective treatments requires extensive study with a teacher who themselves, has had thousands of hours of study and experience. A manual osteopathic education that doesn’t provide many hundreds of hours of in-person, hands-on contact time misses the point of the process, and fails the student on every level.

 

We have restructured our courses to facilitate the instruction of our students and yet still provide the in – depth hands-on study required to be a safe and effective practitioner. Here at OAoPO we are determined to provide the highest level of osteopathic education, while not compromising on safety concerns nor on the quality of the student experience. Students deserve an educational experience that facilitates their personal growth while at the same time gives them the skills and knowledge to thrive in a clinical setting.
